A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
