Colombia's Leader Says 'I Shall Return to Arms Again' should American Forces Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and his Colombian counterpart have turned up the tone of their war of words, further raising strains in their relations after US forces targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs drug factories and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Growing Threats and Claims

Talking to reporters on Sunday, Trump hinted at comparable military action against Bogotá, asserting Colombia is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia stands as the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

This nation has long been a key ally of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support in Washington, however, the relationship have soured markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions such as the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom disbanded after a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Defiant Rebuttal

When asked whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected the accusations. "I am no illegitimate and certainly not involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without information. Stop slandering me," he posted online.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. If they capture the nation's leader, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.

From Insurgent to President

Petro spent some years as a young man as a member with the radical M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate that he never participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he took part in creating the nation's constitution in the early 90s and later became a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to never again hold a gun ... but in defense of my country I would take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Broad Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister announced that Petro's security detail had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, yet figures spanning Colombian politics have denounced the threats of American military action against their nation.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

Washington cancelled the president's entry visa following he urged US troops to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and various associates.

At the same time as the US increased its military presence near Venezuela and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted operations on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
