Sam Fender has given the complete sum of his £25k honor winnings to the MVT, which operates to protect the United Kingdom's independent concert spaces.

He was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his third album his work was declared the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role local spots played in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

The money assisted spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties arising from floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, court cases and sound issues.

Additional spaces received funding support in modernizing amenities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and audiences.

"The notion that money from shows in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just common sense," the star has commented.

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued two local spots in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in the city were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
