Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
